Renate Beerling

In 1990, after living in Germany for ten years, I returned to Kent with two young children and trained as a teacher. Having achieved a BA(Ed)Hons with University of Kent (Christ Church College), I taught in local primary schools, until an opportunity arose to work in special education. Working within a behaviour support service, I taught pupils with ADHD, ASD, SpLD (Dyslexia) and mental health difficulties in a primary; and secondary pupil referral unit, as SENCO. I also provided outreach support to primary schools. After a career break, I undertook a Masters in Education with The Open University, which included Level 7 accreditation by The British Dyslexia Association in diagnostic dyslexia assessment and teaching of people with literacy difficulties. I qualified with MA(Ed) and AMBDA in 2012 and worked for Dyslexia Action and as a self-employed Specialist Dyslexia Teacher and Assessor. I was introduced to Betty Martindale, who invited me to join Ashford Dyslexia Centre in April 2012. When Betty retired in 2018, I became Head of Centre.
